Yang Zhong 鐘陽

I am a fifth year (final-year) PhD candidate in the computer science department at the University of Pittsburgh, advised by Prof. Diane Litman. My work focuses on natural language processing, machine learning, and evaluation for text generation.

I received my B.S. from UT Austin, where I worked with Prof. Junyi Jessy Li, and my M.S. from The Ohio State University, where I worked with Prof. Wei Xu.

Research themes

Summarization and evaluation

Long-document summarization, factual consistency, and educational reflection synthesis.

Application areas

Education, law, and signed language

Grounding NLP methods in real domains where structure, access, and trust all matter.

Current work

LLM-centered analysis

Studying how large language models can support open-ended educational summarization and evaluation.

Updates

Recent milestones and paper news.

  • Aug 2025: I received the CS50 fellowship, awarded to two PhD students across the computer science department.
  • Jun 2025: I started my internship at Amazon in Seattle.
  • May 2025: Two papers were accepted to ACL 2025 Main and Findings.
  • Jan 2025: Two papers were accepted to NAACL 2025 main conference.
  • Apr 2024: I passed my Oral PhD Comprehensive Exam with committee members Diane Litman, Xiang Lorraine Li, and Xiaowei Jia.
Research

I build NLP systems and evaluation methods for text generation, with an emphasis on discourse, factuality, educational applications, and socially grounded language technologies.
